Hello again everyone. It's time for another Guild Spotlight! This month I sat down with Lord Adraas' Hydian Expedition Outfit (HEO) and their leader Ringo Orlan. The HEO is a semi-independent Republic organization that does the Republic's dirty work while allowing it to officially have deniability. It almost sounds like Mission: Impossible's IMF to me.
Republic RP is suffering a disadvantage of numbers recently. Every server has seen shrinking populations as the newness of The Old Republic has worn off, and other big MMO titles are launching. The Republic has always been the victim of a faction imbalance, so we've been trying to highlight them recently to help turn that around. If you are interested in a Guild Spotlight of your own, you can contact myself of Ganden to officially request one. For now though, read on to see what Ringo has to say about the Hydian Expedition Outfit!

It's time again for another of SWTOR-RP's monthly Guild Spotlight series! For this month, I sat down with a few officers of Shien's The Jade Company. As our first spotlight on the Shien server, it's a great look into the fledgling roleplay community there. In addition, this is a bit late. It's because our original interview time got interrupted when I was at the Guild Summit. One of the things I learned there was that there are many more Imperial than Republic players, and Republic-side roleplay is struggling on almost every server. Shien seems to be doing fine though, and as you'll see in this article, they've got one hell of a guild leading the way and helping to establish storylines and roleplay on their server for Republic players.
The Jade Company is a Republic-aligned paramilitary organization that takes both Jedi and non-Force Sensitives. One of their officers, Sebastian Kyle, also works on SWTOR-RP's staff as one of our Wiki Editors, and is responsible for most of the formatting on the wiki, as well as the page creators that make getting started easy. If you're on the Shien server, or considering moving to look for Republic roleplay, The Jade Company certainly seems dedicated to the community, and as you'll read in a moment, committed to good storytelling as well.

Welcome back to another issue of The Darker Side of Life, the roleplay column for The Old Republic where we take a look at the issues concerning roleplayers, and try to find solutions for them. In this week's issue, we're tackling stealth and how it affects roleplay, specifically spying and information gathering. Spying can be a core part of an RP community, with different groups trying to figure out what each other is doing. There are all sorts of ways to gather information, from bribery, to torture, even just being a fly on the wall and listening in. The real question is, what happens if that fly on the wall has stealth abilities and can't be seen by the other players, is it still legitimate?
As always, I've collected your responses from the thread and worked them into this article where we're going to try and come up with some ways to make stealth RP work, and make it fun for everyone. Sitting cloaked in a meeting watching your enemies plot may be exciting from an adrenaline rush for the first minute or two, but without any interaction it gets boring. After all, if they can't see you, there's a zero percent chance of being discovered, and that's also why many players consider it unfair. Join me as we dive into the issue head first and try to settle the debate over whether stealth powers are acceptable to use in roleplay.

The
relationship between a student and their mentor is one we see multiple
times in the Star Wars films; Obi-Wan and Luke, Anakin and Palpatine, or
all the shades in between. Learning from others isn't exclusive to the
Jedi, or the Sith, though -- an older pilot could have a younger sidekick
he's taken under his wing, or a Bounty Hunter might keep an eye out for
a less experienced newcomer. We've already seen the a wide variety of
teachers and students in The Old Republic, acting out that familiar
relationship, whether it be in or out of character. Almost universally,
it tends to be a great source of jokes, fun, and fantastic roleplay
adventures. That leads to the discussion for this Force
Reflection: who are your mentors, and what do they mean, to you? Are
they your Padawan's Master, or is your relationship one of a slave being
forced to serve a Dark Lord? Did it start through a coincidence of
roleplay; a chance encounter that struck the interest of one of you, and
continued from there? Or did you seek out and arrange something with a
friend, or, perhaps, a complete stranger? Does your Agent have a sidekick; does your Trooper have someone they look out for? How's it worked out? Make your
voice heard, as always, in the comments. Just be sure to ask your master for permission first, slave.

In this week's The Darker Side of Life, we're going to be going into a topic that many RPers struggle with and argue over. Just how much of the time can you be in-character? In the article on roleplaying BioWare's story, we touched on using the class stories in-character. This time we're going to dig deeper and include the rest of the game too. There is more to the game than just the stories. If you happen to be standing around the Galactc Trade Network on your faction's fleet base, are you still in-character? Some players refuse to use voice chat, not because it might give away that your busty Twi'lek waitress as some hairy guy, but because once you know what a player sounds like, their characters might start sounding like that in your head too, instead of whatever accent they may be trying to portray.
For those of us that have been around RP communities a long time, there are also the people we've run into that refuse to communicate OOCly with other players as well. All they do is roleplay; everything else is shunned. Is that the apex of heavy roleplay, or a dangerous lack of communication that will lead to unnecessary drama? The question at the heart of this week's column really might be how much of our community is OOC.
Read on as we break down different activites and review community responses from The Darker Side of Life thread on how people feel about doing those activities in-character. Through this we'll attempt to find a line that can be used to guide people about what is IC and what is OOC. After all, once you've finished levelling, many players will find that their time is spent doing different activites like PvP warzones that don't lend themselves as well to roleplay as a Flashpoint might. How do we deal with it? Read on and we'll try to figure it out together.

We know in game mechanics that "red = ded," right? However, in real life, it is a little more complicated than that. Sometimes in war the enemy is not always dressed in black with a nice symbol floating above her head signifying that she is, indeed, the bad guy. As any adult is aware, sometimes the enemy is actually most friendly to you.
In Star Wars: The Old Republic, it will be hard not to know which faction Troopers, Jedi, and Sith are working for, but that still leaves three classes whose allegiances are a bit more ambiguous. It is also highly suspected that there will be non-faction clothing for purchase from social vendors. So how will we know who our enemy is in the Velvet Pearl?
However, let's take, for instance, that you find out that the woman you have been dancing with is actually an Imperial Agent or a Smuggler working for the Republic. How will your character react? Is he the type who would shoot first and ask questions later, or is he a little more complicated than that? What will your character do when he sees the other faction in SWTOR?

Our heroes are many. We grow up idolising different individuals over time, hoping to one day become a shadow of the hero we so cherish and envy. Whether these people are your parents, siblings, actors and actresses, or business tycoons, we place them on a pedestal in our minds and gape at them in awe. What is it though that makes these people so great? Is their accomplishments that wins our desire? Is it their personalities and mannerisms that we strive to one day make our own? Or is it their display of undying strength and determination whilst pointing a laser chaingun at the enemy and mowing them down to claim victory? Wait... what?
In The Old Republic, Jace Malcom – depicted in the Return and Hope cinematic trailers – could be said to have been made famous for his heroic display against the odds in battles with the Sith Empire. Whether he's detonating a grenade still in his hand in an attempt to wound an enemy, or he's manning his large laser chaingun and raining havoc on the Sith, Jace's will to fight for what's right knows no bounds. Perhaps you prefer military achievements amongst the commissioned ranks of the Galactic Republic, with General Garza's controversial relentless in military tactics being a prime example. If the military is completely out of the question for you, Supreme Chancellor Janarus' means of political leadership might be up your alley.
With Republic week kicking off at SWTOR-RP, let us know who your hero of the Republic is. If you're a fan of the Trooper class, Jace Malcom may just be that hero. Otherwise, if you prefer espionage and top secret missions, Theron Shan – son of the Grand Master of the Jedi Order – might just tickle your fancy. Whoever you idolise from the Galactic Republic, let us know who they are and why they're your hero in the comments section. Viva La Republic!

As an Imperial Agent, of course, I knew that the corruption of the Galactic Republic would eventually cause the delicate fabric of their government to be split apart. However, even I didn't realize just how torn the Republic was already. Imperial Intelligence discovered a secret weapon of mass destruction designed to literally launch asteroids into the surface of a planet causing massive if not planetary-wide destruction. The Republic calls it The Hammer, and Lord Malgus wants it as a prize for the Empire. And I intend to get it for him.
At the fan site summit held last week in Austin, Texas, Vaanthe and I experienced many facets of Star Wars: The Old Republic that have not been revealed yet. The sparkly newness of Drumond Kaas and Flashpoints filled our eyes with wonder and excitement. On the second day of the summit, the BioWare community team sat us in front of brand-new NVIDIA desktops, whetting our appetite with virgin level-16 characters just begging us to play. We were allowed to spec our avatar as we wished – specifically, which Advanced Class we would like to play.
After the break, follow the adventure of my Republic Vanguard as he tackles The Hammer and prevents it from falling into Imperial hands.

In the newest installment of the Choose Your Side series of videos, the Republic Trooper and Sith Inquisitor are sized up by members of the BioWare team. Writer Charles Boyd and Combat Designer Cameron Winston favor the big guns, while the more subtle Inquisitor is championed by Writing Director Daniel Erickson and Combat Designer Austin Peckenpaugh. Watch the video below and see for yourself as they discuss their favorite elements of each class and the hows and whys of who would win in a fight between Commander Cody and Darth Maul.
There's certainly some juicy tidbits in there for roleplayers as well, as the trooper is described as a "shoot first, ask questions later" sort of character who carries the weight of responsibility on his shoulders. Meanwhile the inquisitor is "always thinking, always calculating," and can dish out enough lightning to power the entirety of Coruscant. Whether you plan on playing a one-man Michael Bay film or plotting elaborate schemes in the hopes of hearing your favorite Mon Calamari catchphrase, the clips shown should help make the wait just a little less bearable.
While the trooper in this installment appears to be a commando, the general theme of guns and ammo should suit anyone looking to take up a role in the Republic Military. Fans of the sorcerer may find themselves disappointed however, as this inquisitor seems to have taken the route of stealth and the double-bladed lightsaber. Still, there's plenty of lightning to go around and the developers spend a good deal of time discussing the importance (or unimportance!) of range between the two classes.
Take a look at the video and let us know where you're placing your bets in the comments below! BioWare is also encouraging players to shout out their favorites over Twitter with either the #CYSInquisitor or #CYSTrooper hashtags.

Hello everyone! It's time for our first November Guild Spotlight! Since we've seen so much discussion on Troopers and Jedi recently, I sat down with Antia Oato of the 96th Reapers Regiment to tell us how her guild makes it work. Undoubtedly there will be many different ways of solving the problem, but the 96th is on the rise, so they must be doing something right. Check out what Antia has to say on it, and be sure to let us know what you think in the comments.
Military guilds are going to be a staple of RP in The Old Republic. Many of the players gravitating towards them are veterans of similar Stormtrooper guilds in Star Wars Galaxies, as is Antia of the 96th. It's going to be a jump from oppression to liberation, but much of the military structure derived from real world armies still applies. Jedi are the wild card, especially how to work them in. The Clone Wars series has Jedi Generals heroically leading troopers into battle, but does it fit The Old Republic? The Jedi have been disgraced, and while they are still heroes to many, will the Republic Military trust them? Read on to see what Antia and the 96th have to say!
