The Galactic Republic's jewel of reconstruction efforts is no longer solely under their pitiful grasp of chaos and inefficiency. Their soldiers are failing and their resolve is weakening due to their bloated, foul idea of making Taris a world worth "living" on. Nothing on this planet is worth saving and everything is worth destroying. Every citizen of the Sith Empire knew this from the day it was razed, and historians would have hoped that the destruction would save the effort so that our strength could be used elsewhere, such as a second sacking of Coruscant. While the foolish former Republic Governor Saresh sought to rebuild the world, the most eminent Darth Gravus has the Sith Empire's best interests in mind as he carries out the Dark Council's wishes to occupy and destroy the presence of the weakened Galactic Republic.

Politics is always a hot-button topic. Some people become more ornery than a Reek in mating season while others hold fast to the stance of not caring until they're in shackles or being beaten by a vicious overlord. While the team at Republic HoloNet News discourages those with political opinions to resort to violence or to dissent, sometimes the only thing which encourages the bureaucratic process along is a big event like the Treaty of Coruscant or a violent rebellion like the one taking place on Corellia. Last week, Voices asked you, our favorite sentient, to voice your opinions on the current administration of your government. It didn't matter if you're from the Empire, Republic, or an independent system. Voices wanted to know. Let's see what you had to say!

How many of you were aware of April Fools'? Were you subject to an April Fools' joke? Fans of The Old Republic who follow the game's news on the official website would have seen an update of a new game feature, dubbed the " Ship Droid Experience!" As much as it embarrasses me to say, I thought this was completely legit. I had my Reporters jump onto the news of this alleged new game feature, and the very next day we published our own coverage. I logged on the next day and saw some of the comments. " April Fools!" read a comment by one our members. Suffice to say, I slowly sunk lower into my chair and dropped my head in shame. However, I doubt I was walking alone on Naivety Street that day. Who else was fooled? Come one now, put your hands up! Help a brother out!
Despite this minor setback, April was an exciting month for players of The Old Republic and the members at SWTOR-RP. Why? Legacy! Game Update 1.2 went live, and we finally got a glimpse of what the Legacy System was all about. How many of you were relieved to discover that connecting your characters wasn't limited to family? Not only can you create your own dynasty, but you can also link your characters as allies and foes. Pure brilliance, I say.
The month of April also housed a number of other exciting updates here at SWTOR-RP. We continued with our Flashpoint and story progression in-character entries, bringing the in-game events to you in an exciting breaking news format. Some of the servers held some unique roleplaying events which we covered on our front page, and we saw the birth of a new column by our esteemed Reporter Norri. Read up on all of this plus more in our April edition of Month In Review.

The Rakghoul plague is an efficient virus which no being so far has yet been known to master. Even with the popular vaccine and its dwindling supplies, sentients of every species and subspecies continue to fall to infection and genetic mutation. Taris will likely always be a warzone outside of settlement walls until the end of time because of it, and scarce few beasts are able to remain independently thinking as they were before infection. The Tarsarian Devourer is an enigma to such a rule, the exception due to genetics so unfathomably strong, it's impossible to exactly pinpoint why the Devourer is still physically unaffected by the Rakghoul plague while it still holds the virus in its body innately ever since the first Rakghoul bit the first Tarsarian. Originally the Tarsarians were a species imported to be kept in Tarisian zoos. Post-bombardment freedom allowed the Tarsarians to flock, breed, and hunt amongst the growing jungles of the decaying urban landscape which gave way to the sprawling jungles seen today. Once bitten, the Tarsarian quickly rose to the top of the food chain. It killed, mauled, and ripped apart all other predators which stood in its way, especially uninfected Tarsarians. Throughout the years of genetic infection and breeding, the Tarsarian gained an odd trait: the inability to pass on the Rakghoul disease which coursed through its own blood. As the RHN Biolife Report team found out, even blood-to-blood contact will contract nothing worse than a common outbreak of influenza. This is not to imply that the Tarsarian is not a threat, however, as they are still the top of the proverbial food chain on Taris. Their ability to topple Rakghouls, Nexu, and all other forms of fauna remain well-rooted with their newer, more aggressive style of hunting which doesn't look like is going to slow them down any time soon. Like many of Taris' flora and fauna, the indigenous Bogstalker was thought to be extinct since the planet's prehistory until its rediscovery during the planet's recent recolonization. Unlike what the original Tarisians thought, the Bogstalker survived for millennia beneath the sprawling undercity in sewers and maintenance piping. After the bombardment turned most of the planet wide city that was Taris into a mess of broken buildings, irradiated swamps, sinkholes, and flooded bogs, the Bogstalker slowly began to see the sky again. They thrived due to their natural ability to adapt well to swampy habitats and moist areas such as the sewers they were so accustomed to for centuries. With the spread of Taris' swamp-like environment over the years, the Bogstalker have entered a full-on mating frenzy. Males and females both have become exceedingly interested in procreation, opting the Planetary Travel Advisory to issue several warning areas to seemingly good settlement sections which are swarmed with mating Bogstalkers during the night hours. As if they were born to live in pollution, the Bogstalker's recent upturn in breeding has also led to a more resilient, faster species as they evolve and adapt to their new homes. The radiation and pollutants in their swampy homes have made their flesh poisonous to all of their predators, including the worldwide menace that are the Rakghouls. This is an Imperial News Network travel ban update.
The planet Tatooine has been the site of a major Rakghoul plague outbreak. Authorities believe the Rakghoul threat has spread to densely populated areas.
Do not land on Tatooine.
Furthermore, do not answer distress calls or other communications from the planet without official clearance. The Ministry of Logistics will advise when this travel ban has expired. Until then, remain vigilant, keep calm, and avoid Tatooine.
Quarantine teams have been dispatched to starports and major transportation hubs to help contain the plague. If you or anyone you know exhibit symptoms of the Rakghoul plague, it is your duty to help contain the outbreak. Report any infected to the nearest Imperial Military Outpost. Failure to comply is treason.

The Ferrazid hound is as old as Taris itself. Long before Taris became a world-spanning city, it had hunted small birds and lizards, roaming in packs and using the tactics of a semi-intelligent animal in the damp swamps and dense jungles of the future Republic world. Due to their territorial nature, fearsome jaw power, and their tendency to stay in packs they never, truly, had a predator in the old pre-colonization Taris. Taris did not remain a moist jungle world, and as time went on and colonization arrived, the entire planet evolved from a jungle of trees and animals to one of humanoids and buildings reaching kilometers into the bleak Tarisian sky. The Golden Age of Taris made many species extinct, some of them not having so much as DNA samples left in a beaker by the time of the first Sith occupation during the Jedi Civil War. Indeed, the century-long Golden Age which made small villages into towering, cloud-capped skyscrapers killed more than it created. The Ferrazid's natural hunting grounds were destroyed—what little remained in the 'undercity' became infested with Rakghouls. The few males and females gathered before the industrial boom were thrown into zoos to appease xenobiologists who were not in favor of the native species being driven to extinction due to humanoid nature.

Few beasts are as beautiful and practical as the beloved Varactyl. Originating from Utapau, the Varactyl were originally hunted for game for hundreds of years for their colorful plumage and their warm, durable fur. As the planet's society evolved the Utapauns began to domesticate the fur-and-feather covered creatures and turn them into their mode of transportation before the planet's technological golden age.
Even after the boon of space flight and hyperspace travel, the Varactyl have been used as non-mechanized mounts across Utapau. So adaptable and able at what they do, several companies from all corners of space had begun to buy their own litter of Varactyl pups. Eventually, they came to be a common sight across the galaxy, most of them landing in the hands of those in need of traversing hazardous areas with the expertise and finesse that only the Utapaun Varactyl could provide. Where skiffs and speeders would break down under sweltering heat or begin to teeter precariously on unsure cliff edges, the Varactyl would perch like they were born to do it—and many xenobiologists agree that they were, indeed, born to do it!
One of the fastest species in the galaxy, Varactyl have been known to outrun the most vicious predators, several history documents claiming that a racing swoop was beaten to one of the beasts in a head-to-head race. Unfortunately, the spread of Varactyl have led to unknown side-effects after their owners became one with the Force or their pens came to ruination.
While wild Varactyl may share physical properties with their domesticated cousins, they may very well be dangerous! The loving, peaceful creatures have been known to kill many a traveller advancing towards the commonly friendly beasts in search for petting due to the proximity to a Varactyl nest. Never make that mistake! Wild Varactyl are very, very territorial!
Other than isolated instances of travellers advancing on nests, the Varactyl is, indeed, how it is perceived: the excellent companion. Eternally grateful, loving, and ever happy to see its owner, many Varactyl have been known to throw themselves into the way of harm for their riders, the intelligence in the reptavian species' eyes being nothing else but intelligence and love. Currently, they are the most sought-after non-mechanized beast of burden and are a favorite amongst ranchers and explorers, but RHS definitely agrees that as long as you're mounted on a Varactyl, it is they who have your back.

When the Treaty of Coruscant was signed, it left a sour taste in the mouths of every citizen of the Galactic Republic. Coruscant burned, Alderaan's government was nearing collapse and the unemployment rates across the galaxy reached record highs that hadn't been seen in centuries. Refugees starved, several worlds suddenly faced a complete halt in supplies, others drove into civil war. Balmorra was abandoned, and countless faithful army units who still—in spite of being ignored—felt loyal to their government. We were beaten and bloodied, our representatives grabbing for straws as their estates burned and their bank accounts emptied. The Sith Empire had finally won.
But we refused to back down to such a decadent and malevolent enemy. Soldiers and citizens of the Galactic Republic outright refused to submit to the intergalactic bullies on Dromund Kaas. Through outrage and inability to take any more corruption, both Ord Mantell and Coruscant are now being thoroughly cleaned of corrupt politicians. Citizens are beginning to vote responsibly, submit complaints, and lend themselves to reconstruction efforts across the ravaged worlds of the Republic.
One of those worlds is Taris. Untouched by the war, a Senatorial decree ordered that Taris would be one of the first lost Republic worlds to begin recolonization since the Jedi Civil War. The initial efforts were a disaster—ten years of Governor after Governor falling into ruin after the trials became too much for them. Once more it seemed as if the Sith had defeated the best we had to offer—until planetary Governor Saresh.

Look at your watch, and now back to me. Now take out a piece of paper and write the date. It's the middle of February now so most people have stopped writing 2011 by accident and switched to 2012. This is real life and we know when we are. In fact, it's crucial to our very way of life. Log in to The Old Republic now and strike up some roleplay with another player. Chances are neither of you even know exactly what year it is. In a galaxy that is quickly spiraling towards all out war, don't you think it would be good to know if the war has started yet?
My regular readers know I come from Star Wars Galaxies; an entirely different beast of the MMO genre where players spent eight years in 1 ABY. That's one year after the first Death Star was destroyed in A New Hope, and before the Battle of Hoth in The Empire Strikes Back. Sony Online Entertainment kept the game world static, despite releasing a Battle of Hoth instance near the end. BioWare is taking a completely different approach. You may not have realized it but the timeline has already moved since launch with the release of Game Update 1.1. With the release of Game Update 1.2 in March, it will move ahead again, and continue to every major update. How do we work with that in roleplay?
There are a lot of people that want to RP in the cold war a while before jumping into the war. Other people think that since BioWare is moving the timeline, we should jump right to the end. How can we rectify that? After all, if a group is RPing years apart from you in character, how do you interact with them? Clearly we need a way to find out just when we all are. So read on and we'll discuss your thoughts about the issue in this week's The Darker Side of Life.
