Congratulations! You've received your ship either through hard-won efforts in the Dark Temple, stealing it from someone, reclaiming it from a thief or earning it from your superiors on Coruscant. Now your roleplay can actually begin, right? Right? How many of us wait to RP until we get a ship? I'll admit, the ship is pretty convenient (and sometimes necessary) for RP with friends or within your guild. But is it really essential for RP? Certainly we can RP without it, right? For example, a cadre of apprentices on Korriban break tradition and work together to fulfill their masters' designs. Perhaps a couple of Smugglers realize a split profit is better than none at all and work to clear out Ord Mantell of problems. The point is, the ship may be necessary for RP in certain ways, but one can always find way to do without it. Do you RP without your ship? If so, what sorts of things do you normally do? Post below and tell us all!

Though the peace treaty between the Galactic Republic and Sith Empire remains in tact, it is no secret that many worlds are still engulfed in conflict. Ord Mantell, Alderaan, and Coruscant hold mini-pits of war between the two mega factions of our galaxy, and the military services are stretched thin to maintain peace and order. However, recent reports from Ord Mantell and Quesh have revealed that since the Great War, the military have been utilising means other than food and water to keep their troops on the go—military adrenals are being manufactured and shipped to military outposts around the galaxy in an effort to keep soldiers fit and healthy.
"The adrenals are safe," states a Captain of the Republic Military. "They're non-addictive stimulants which enhances a soldier's endurance, stamina and reflexes. Usage of these adrenals are maintained across the board to limit adrenal abuse."
Despite the military's efforts to ensure that dosage amounts are kept in check, there have been instances where soldier's have relied too heavily on the adrenals, causing their bodies to become overstressed. Additionally, theft of these adrenals have increased, and stocks have begun appearing in the black market.

Look at your watch, and now back to me. Now take out a piece of paper and write the date. It's the middle of February now so most people have stopped writing 2011 by accident and switched to 2012. This is real life and we know when we are. In fact, it's crucial to our very way of life. Log in to The Old Republic now and strike up some roleplay with another player. Chances are neither of you even know exactly what year it is. In a galaxy that is quickly spiraling towards all out war, don't you think it would be good to know if the war has started yet?
My regular readers know I come from Star Wars Galaxies; an entirely different beast of the MMO genre where players spent eight years in 1 ABY. That's one year after the first Death Star was destroyed in A New Hope, and before the Battle of Hoth in The Empire Strikes Back. Sony Online Entertainment kept the game world static, despite releasing a Battle of Hoth instance near the end. BioWare is taking a completely different approach. You may not have realized it but the timeline has already moved since launch with the release of Game Update 1.1. With the release of Game Update 1.2 in March, it will move ahead again, and continue to every major update. How do we work with that in roleplay?
There are a lot of people that want to RP in the cold war a while before jumping into the war. Other people think that since BioWare is moving the timeline, we should jump right to the end. How can we rectify that? After all, if a group is RPing years apart from you in character, how do you interact with them? Clearly we need a way to find out just when we all are. So read on and we'll discuss your thoughts about the issue in this week's The Darker Side of Life.

In a monumental and normally unseen rate of change, the formerly rundown "heart" of the galaxy is suddenly becoming the respectable planet it was before the Great Galactic War. Plagued by corruption, crime, hunger, and the rampant fires that still burn from the Sacking of Coruscant, it almost seemed like an impossible task to turn the world that was sliding into a pit of Rancor filth back into the prosperous center of trade it once was. While planets like Ord Mantell and Alderaan still suffer from internal problems, the changes taking place on Coruscant will pave the way to a galaxy strong in democracy and purity of government. These changes will also put fear back into the Empire, their border skirmishes and strong-arming will not last long against the combined focus of the Galactic Republic. Several cases of corrupt Senators have come to light, many admitting to working with criminal elements for voting purposes or being exposed by good-willed citizens who love democracy! Never before have so many government officials resigned than those in the past and coming months due to the fear of being forced out of office or arrested due to their own twisted hunger for power.
Only so much as a year ago, Coruscant seemed unbearably close to its breaking point – the point where billions of refugees and other civilian lives would be cut down in an ever-growing tension that tore the lower levels apart at the seams. Criminal gangs controlled several districts, as well as violent paramilitary groups, Cthon, hunger, and more led to an inflow of complaints, and deaths, which the Senate couldn't ignore any longer.

In this week's The Darker Side of Life, we're going to be going into a topic that many RPers struggle with and argue over. Just how much of the time can you be in-character? In the article on roleplaying BioWare's story, we touched on using the class stories in-character. This time we're going to dig deeper and include the rest of the game too. There is more to the game than just the stories. If you happen to be standing around the Galactc Trade Network on your faction's fleet base, are you still in-character? Some players refuse to use voice chat, not because it might give away that your busty Twi'lek waitress as some hairy guy, but because once you know what a player sounds like, their characters might start sounding like that in your head too, instead of whatever accent they may be trying to portray.
For those of us that have been around RP communities a long time, there are also the people we've run into that refuse to communicate OOCly with other players as well. All they do is roleplay; everything else is shunned. Is that the apex of heavy roleplay, or a dangerous lack of communication that will lead to unnecessary drama? The question at the heart of this week's column really might be how much of our community is OOC.
Read on as we break down different activites and review community responses from The Darker Side of Life thread on how people feel about doing those activities in-character. Through this we'll attempt to find a line that can be used to guide people about what is IC and what is OOC. After all, once you've finished levelling, many players will find that their time is spent doing different activites like PvP warzones that don't lend themselves as well to roleplay as a Flashpoint might. How do we deal with it? Read on and we'll try to figure it out together.

Ord Mantell. In recent years the planet has become a warzone, with battles fought between the loyalist Government, and a large foundation of Separatists who wish to secede from the Republic proper. The Separatists grievances are well-known, and they cite the corruption of the planetary government and the Republic's lack of motivation to address that problem as their primary reason for willing to go to war. For it's part, the Government denies the accusations of corruption and claims it merely wishes to remain a proud part of the Republic.
Regardless of the reasons behind the conflict however, civilians are always caught in the crossfire, and the Republic has deployed several small infantry units to the battlefield to aid the Ord Mantell Gov't in neutralizing the threat the Separatists pose to Republic citizens. Chief among these, is a new company of the 7th Republic Infantry Battalion.

Unfortunately, all good things must eventually come to an end. Worlds of The Old Republic is a series of articles based on the planets that we'll be able to visit in BioWare's upcoming game, detailing the planets' history and story, as well as a few interesting facts. This is the seventh and final edition of the series, covering the last three planets, saving some of the best for last. Coruscant and Corellia, majority of you should be familiar with, especially if you call yourself a Star Wars fan. The third and final planet featured in this article is Ord Mantell. Each planet is aligned with the Republic, but they're said to have suffered an impact from the Empire or criminal organisations in some way. Lets find out how.
