IV. Even Deeper

1. Targeting

This is not a drastically big deal (and even less so in Star Wars considering mods for targeting are not allowed), but some of the more strict RPers would rather see it done than not, so I will go over it quickly.

Boomer seems to be an arrogant guy, so Joe, keeping in line with the Fourth Wall Technique (I'll get into this more in a bit), has Boomer himself constantly targeted unless he is speaking to someone else directly. Targeting your own character with the marker, often times in RP shows that your character is stuck on themselves, arrogant, self-centered, etc.

Targeting no one during a conversation shows that your character is uninterested in what the other person or people are saying (rr often times, it is forgotten, which is okay too). The character could be seen by others as careless, a liar, nonchalant, uninterested, or even shy. As it is in real life, if you do not look someone in the eye while you're speaking with them, it usually shows a lack of confidence, or the person may be lying.

Tatooine, a mostly unremarkable planet located in the Outer Rim, was the location of hostilities traded between the Republic and the Empire. This planet is generally known for housing a few Exchange Cartel gangs and lots of sand. A small Imperial force was sent to inspect a base located in the Dune Sea region and found themselves surrounded by Republic forces. It is reported that the Republic troops attacked, and the small Imperial detachment was forced to evacuate the area. More Imperial forces, overseen by Darth Thyrus and his Black Star fleet, moved in as the distress signal was received. Fortifications were set up in the Jundland area in preparation for pursuit of the Republic troops that had attacked.

The next week saw various skirmishes and battles occur between both sides as the Empire formed a blockade to the east and south of the region around the Jundland area and its surrounding perimeter. This forced the Republic forces within a very small area, but this did not contain them entirely as they once again attacked in certain spots.
Vanya Mia A fine example of cross-faction RP with that added spice of PvP. The team organising it did a fantastic job!

You're walking along and you find some nice looking Mirialan in Jedi-looking robes. You strike up a conversation and find out that he's an orphan from Corellia. All right, nothing too unbelievable. Then he mentions that he was raised by Green Jedi to be a weapon meant to strike against the Sith armed with naught but a hydrospanner and three adegan eels.

What the kriff?

All backgrounds are going to be different, and usually the more creative you are, the better it is.  However, there's some point where the line has to be drawn. Otherwise, what is to stop the Chiss adoptee from Alderaan to start hunting bounties with a tazer and some meat rolls? Or the Twi'lek smuggler selling deathsticks for the splanch transplant of their Hutt father?

Where do you draw the line with believability in roleplay? What makes you go..."what the kriff?" Tell us below!

"Dear Elza,

So... a while back, my girlfriend broke up with me. We had been apart for awhile, and there was someone else on her side of things, so she came to me and officially ended the relationship. This is only background, not the point of the submission. I've been trying to move on, trying to find someone else to be with, but... there are two. This is the problem.

Obviously, dating both is not an option, but I like them both. One of them is slightly younger than me and has a bit of a crush. I try not to let on that I know she has a crush on me, but... well, I do know. The other is also around my age, I think, (truthfully, I haven't asked as it’s kind of an awkward question) and she also likes me, I'm fairly certain. She's more mature than the other and just as nice, and in actuality, I imagine a relationship with her being more successful, but I just can't choose. I care about both of them, of course, so I know being with one will probably hurt the other which I really don't want to happen.

What should I do, and how do I let the other down gently?"

As many of you know, the Star Wars universe is unique in many ways, one of which being its wide array of advanced technology. With the highly intelligent robots, gigantic information repositories, and the incredibly powerful (and equally complex) vehicles, how could someone be expected to understand even a fraction of all the technology buzzing around them? Or can most get along just fine knowing only how to operate these things without the knowledge of how they truly work?

If you are reading this article, it most likely means you own a computer and know how to use it to gain access to the internet and the content therein. It is less likely that you have an intimate knowledge on how the a computer runs, or even how the internet works on varying levels. With that said, it could easily be assumed that characters in the Star Wars universe have similar depths of knowledge, being able to operate a wide variety of tools without needing an in-depth knowledge of how everything they use works. Have you put time and actual RP into learning more about the technology all around you, or  is your character's "tech" knowledge fluid, allowing them to be more or less knowledgeable depending on what can be beneficial to roleplay?

So how "tech savvy" is your character? Do they have trouble turning on a datapad, or can they hotwire a speeder in a minute flat while slicing your bank account and robbing you blind? Let us know in the comments below!

Whether it is the epics of Homer or the pictographic scrawl on a canyon wall, humans have been interested in telling stories for as long as we have been walking. The primal urge to share a fictional world with another person is ingrained in our very genetics. Being the adaptable little creatures that we are, we have always found a way to share these stories with or without written language. Creating ink from berries and charcoal or finding a way to express ourselves with colorful new and occasionally invented language, we regale our companions with adventures of heroes and villains. It is, therefore, no surprise that when given a playground like Star Wars and a toolkit like the one that is given in modern MMOs that we have managed to turn a simple game into a living, breathing epic that would rival the journey of Gilgamesh himself.

The Old Republic has become our canvas and its avatars and settings our ink. This allows us to weave intricate stories that rival even the masters, yet we do one better. The advent of online gaming means that our stories can now intertwine. Imagine if Odysseus had run into Heracles in the underworld. That happens daily for us as the worlds we create begin to overlap and interact, creating a form of storytelling like has never been seen before.

The other incredible turn of events is BioWare's focus on "The Fourth Pillar” as they term it—the story. Now we have our own imagination to add to a rich framework provided by the game's creator. Anyone who has played as an Inquisitor can attest to the effort and care put into this framework by the team of writers at BioWare. They are not the focus though, we are and we have begun in a few short months to make a constantly moving and shifting world inside of our computers.

Hello again everyone. It's time for another Guild Spotlight! This month I sat down with Lord Adraas' Hydian Expedition Outfit (HEO) and their leader Ringo Orlan. The HEO is a semi-independent Republic organization that does the Republic's dirty work while allowing it to officially have deniability. It almost sounds like Mission: Impossible's IMF to me.

Republic RP is suffering a disadvantage of numbers recently. Every server has seen shrinking populations as the newness of The Old Republic has worn off, and other big MMO titles are launching. The Republic has always been the victim of a faction imbalance, so we've been trying to highlight them recently to help turn that around. If you are interested in a Guild Spotlight of your own, you can contact myself of Ganden to officially request one. For now though, read on to see what Ringo has to say about the Hydian Expedition Outfit!

"Dear Elza,

My first boyfriend got bit by a rakghoul and died. I loved him dearly and was devastated when he passed away. His death was very traumatic; a trooper had to shoot him before he turned and I was holding his hand, looking into his eyes as it happened. A mutual friend of ours, who has never hidden his feelings for me, helped me get through the difficult time after my boyfriend's death. He has always been there for me, even in the times I didn't want him to be. We even got involved together, but I had to break it off as it was too soon after my first's death. I wasn't sure then that I loved him, but I am now and for now we are together and happy. So why am I writing to you, you ask?

The person I am now involved with is a force-user. I do love him, though differently than my first boyfriend. I won't call him a Jedi, though he was trained to be one. He has promised me not to become Sith, though more and more he seems to want to go down that path, thinks he can destroy the Sith from the inside. He was even taken by a Darth at one point after he killed his apprentice, becoming an apprentice in place of the one he killed. I and a fellow managed to rescue him, but I get the feeling he wants to go back and finish his training. He's said as much. It feels as if I will lose him unless I let him go, but if I let him go, I'm sure I will lose him to the Sith. He tells me he loves me and that I'm the most important thing to him in the galaxy and he will come back to me. But he really wants to be this Sith’s apprentice, learn to use the Dark side of the force so he can destroy the sith from the inside.

What should I do?

III. Getting Deeper

This next section is for those who have the basics down and are looking to move forward with their RP experience. There are many ways to begin a new RP story, and I'll go through them here.

1. Walk-up RP/Random RP

This one is pretty simple. You see several people chatting over drinks in the cantina, their conversation seems interesting enough, yet you do not know them and they do not know you. How do you go about this? Easy! The same way you would in real life!

/say *Boomer glances over his shoulder at the three men to his left speaking of a new posted bounty at the Imperial Fleet.* "Fella's," *He grumbles in their direction.* "I already took that job, so you can stop running your mouths about it. Though, I could use an extra hand taking in the target. Any of you interested?"

As the three men's attention turn to Boomer, he steps nearer to them and engages in the conversation. Hank, Bow, and Jack all target him (Yes, I mean actually click on Boomer and target him directly. I'll explain this more in a later section.). Jack tells Boomer that he is interested in helping him out with taking the target, but he wants a fifty percent cut of the reward. Boomer in turn targets Jack and tells him that isn't going to happen if he is the one taking on most of the risk, using his ship and his equipment. Hank then asks Boomer his name, and Boomer targets Hank and responds sharply.

"The name's Boomer. I usually run spice, but I decided this week to take on something a little less...deadly." Hank responds to Boomer with his own name, and in turn, Jack and Bow introduce themselves to Boomer. Not every introduction will go this easily or in this manner. But, it is an example of walk-up RP.

II. Basics

There is a lot of material that can be put into this section, so I will try to limit it to the more important things!

1. Spelling and Grammar

All role-players will tell you that these two are the most annoying basics that people make mistakes with in RP. They speak for themselves as far as chat conversations go. Do your best to keep your spelling and grammar as close to proper for easier and smoother reading by the other characters you are in contact with. If your character only speaks Mandalorian, then don't speak Basic or Huttese, unless you can specify that you have learned them in-character. I will now give an example of Spelling and Grammar:

/say *Boomer wakls into teh Canteena his eyes lit up in anger. he struted to the bar and slamed his fist on the top and looked over the crowd before his eyes settle on a twi'lek dancer dressed in only tiny scraps of fabric.* She's a looker, aint she?" He says to no one in particuler before scrubbing his dirty hands over his rugged face.*

It's pretty easy to see what is wrong with the above statement. Though, some of the grammar in the above example leads to our second lesson.
