We all have hobbies; things we do that entertain us, and things we can do when we need to escape the stresses and problems of our daily lives. Some are highly physical, whilst others are purely cerebral, but either way a person's hobbies often define them in very interesting ways. So when it comes to roleplay, shouldn't our characters have their own ways to deal with stress or boredom? To be convincing, won't they have to have hobbies outside of fighting their enemies, tending bar or fixing hyperspace engines?
One of the many interesting aspects of the Star Wars universe is the fact that the movies, books, and comics always create rich environments that feel real. Though they do this by using a variety of techniques, one of the most interesting is showing us board games, card tournaments, and even sporting events. The universe feels real because there are lives and events outside of what we are shown, events and hobbies we can relate to. The ruthless Bounty Hunter we roleplay may be an avid Dejarik player, or the brainy doctor may follow his favorite Huttball team religiously. This extra dimension of roleplay gives people the opportunity to roleplay with those they normally would not.
So, what hobbies do your characters have? What do they do on their down time to keep their sanity, or simply pass the time in between missions or jobs? Well, give us your answer in the comments below!

On March 1st 2012, The Old Republic officially launched in Australia. A new roleplaying server— Gav Daragon—was created, along with another PvE and PvP server. To celebrate the regional expansion of BioWare's and EA's largest ever online project, an official Australian community launch event was held in Sydney. And who other than me, your Australian Editor-in-chief at SWTOR-RP, should attend the event to receive one-on-one time with EA's special guest, Gabe Amatangelo— The Old Republic's Principal Lead Flashpoint, Operations, and PvP Designer?
In our time together, we discussed a number of topics ranging from roleplaying features, PvP, Flashpoints, and Warzones. I also tried my best to find out some exclusive information about Game Update 1.2 and the upcoming Legacy System, but as always, BioWare are very good at remaining tight-lipped about their upcoming features. The good news? We only have to wait one week for all the goodies that will accompany Game Update 1.2.
Earlier in the day, our friends at TOROZ also exchanged banter with Gabe. Be sure to head on over to TOROZ to view their video interview. David Holloway asked some great questions about PvP, and in turn received some great answers from Gabe. But in the meantime, continue below to view SWTOR-RP's very own interview with Gabe Amatangelo.

Normally I'm not one to gush over the Q&A sessions that BioWare put on every now and then. Since they farm questions from the forums as a whole, roleplay questions often get ignored. This one, however, had some interesting topics that interests us as RPers. I'll give you the basic rundown of what the BioWare community team had to say for us. If you want to see the entire article, you can go ahead and read it here. Also of interest is another piece released yesterday on UI updates and the global cooldown changes.
First off is Legacy. Maddeningly vague as always, the tidbit about having benefits for old characters as well is interesting. For those of you who love PvP but hate Huttball, take heart because we can now confirm that the new warzone in Game Update 1.2 will be same faction enabled. The big news for RPers is Daniel Erickson's response on social gear. He hints that 1.2 will introduce social gear for medium and heavy armors, with more changes to come soon after! That's big news, and I can't wait to see what they do. Server transfers are also something they're considering. Could be useful if you're not happy with your current server's group.
Stephen Reid also chimes in on the match-color-to-chestplate function from beta, now called hue-to-chest, which will be making a return in 1.2 after overwhelming community demand when it was removed at the end of beta. Remember that your feedback is being listened to, and that by working together we can make sure that our voices get heard. If you want to know the rest of the responses, continue reading after the break and see what's in store for The Old Republic!

In this week's The Darker Side of Life, we're going to be going into a topic that many RPers struggle with and argue over. Just how much of the time can you be in-character? In the article on roleplaying BioWare's story, we touched on using the class stories in-character. This time we're going to dig deeper and include the rest of the game too. There is more to the game than just the stories. If you happen to be standing around the Galactc Trade Network on your faction's fleet base, are you still in-character? Some players refuse to use voice chat, not because it might give away that your busty Twi'lek waitress as some hairy guy, but because once you know what a player sounds like, their characters might start sounding like that in your head too, instead of whatever accent they may be trying to portray.
For those of us that have been around RP communities a long time, there are also the people we've run into that refuse to communicate OOCly with other players as well. All they do is roleplay; everything else is shunned. Is that the apex of heavy roleplay, or a dangerous lack of communication that will lead to unnecessary drama? The question at the heart of this week's column really might be how much of our community is OOC.
Read on as we break down different activites and review community responses from The Darker Side of Life thread on how people feel about doing those activities in-character. Through this we'll attempt to find a line that can be used to guide people about what is IC and what is OOC. After all, once you've finished levelling, many players will find that their time is spent doing different activites like PvP warzones that don't lend themselves as well to roleplay as a Flashpoint might. How do we deal with it? Read on and we'll try to figure it out together.

Got an urge to blow things up? Looking to work off some stress or earn yourself the best PvP gear to conquer your foes with? Well look no further! BioWare have released an update for the warzones, which includes the three that will be in the game for the launch of Star Wars: The Old Republic this December. Huttball many will already be familiar with from several previous releases, but now we also get a look at the two others -- Alderaan and Voidstar.
The Voidstar is an Imperial warship from the last war that was disabled and left adrift. In its memory banks are secrets both the Republic and Empire are looking for. This warzone is part of the attack and defend style broken into two rounds. The attackers must eradicate the defenders to cut through a series of blast doors, whilst the defenders must hold them until the clock runs out. At the end, whichever side got the farthest fastest wins. You can see a video of the warzone after the cut.

We all enjoy a bit of sport from time to time, whether it be football, tennis, swashbuckling, or ping pong. Die hard fans exist for every sport, with prime examples being those from the South American footballing nations that start riots when their teams begin to lose. It is hard to find dedication like that these days. But these sports provide us with much needed entertainment and an escape from our daily grind. Tickets are easily purchased to go and view your local sport, allowing you to yell out obscenities to the referee with a beer in one hand, and a hotdog in the other.
In Star Wars, sports are not uncommon. We've seen some of the leisure activities that exist in the fantasy world on the big screen, such as the dangerous pod races depicted in The Phantom Menace. Just like sports in real life, fans can get quite passionate about pod racing. Bets are placed on some of the racers, some wagers so high that they see the inevitable release of slaves that turn out to be the galaxy's darkest villains. Other sports exist, with one in particular that we'll see in The Old Republic. Of course, we're referring to Huttball. For other sports from the Star Wars universe, check out Wookieepedia's coverage here.
For today's Force Reflection, tell us which sport from the Star Wars universe you like most, whether it be BioWare's rendition of sports from the Lucas fantasy world, or something more streamline seen in the movies. Post your thoughts in the comments section.

Welcome to another edition of SWTOR-RP's Dev Tracker Report. It has been a bit of a mixed bag in developer posts over the past week, where BioWare's developing team managed to cover a number of different topics for The Old Republic. With beta weekends under way, there were a number of issues raised by the community in regards to the number of invites that were speculatively sent out. Other areas covered by the developers over the last week were atmospheric interaction, more about Huttball, and some much needed clarification about developer interviews. Check out their responses below.

Welcome to SWTOR-RP's Weekly Dev Tracker Report. There was not much of an abundance of activity by the developers from BioWare on the official forums over the last week. Majority of talks, however, were focused on Huttball. There have been some changes made to the mini-game, as well as changes to advanced classes to balance out powers to avoid traps, and to pull others into them. The most notable change to Huttball is the removal of mixed-faction teams. As a result of testing, it was decided to remove the option to have teams mixed with players from both factions. However, teams with players from the same faction can still play against one another. Do you find this an acceptable tweak? Or would you prefer the mixed-faction teams for Huttball? Have a read of the developer comments below, then post your own thoughts in the comments section. Enjoy!

Welcome to SWTOR-RP's Weekly Dev Tracker Report. Following each gaming convention that BioWare decides to reveal it's product at, the official forums go into mayhem with questions and demands from the community for The Old Republic. We get some more information on testing, the latest warzone announcement, and the mother of all issues for roleplayers at the moment -- cross-faction communication. It is an important issue, as any restriction on communication between factions is going to significantly impede on our roleplaying experience. The developers swoop in to clarify misconception, and what a relief. Be sure to view the comments from the developers below, and we'll see you again next week for another tracker report.

BioWare revealed one of it's latest warzones over the weekend which takes the form of a spectator sport with a twist -- killing and cheating is encouraged. The warzone is called Huttball and takes place on Nar Shaddaa. Players from both factions are given the opportunity to form mixed teams, and the deadlier the combinations the better. The warzone consists of two teams going head to head to take control of a hoverball, similar in appearance to a training remote, and to get it across the line of the opposing team's goal line. Hold the ball for too long, and it explodes. The courses are lined with traps, and you'll have other players raining havoc on you as well.
The warzone is another roleplaying opportunity for players in The Old Republic. Whether you spectate and place bets on teams, or you take part in the game itself, anything is possible on Nar Shaddaa -- a planet engulfed by the black market, criminals, and non-contemporary entertainment. In today's Force Reflection, we'd like to know what you plan to do with your characters in Huttball. Will you set up gambling rings or perhaps act as loan sharks? Perhaps you'll put your character through it's paces in the game itself. Let us know in the comments section.
