Hello everyone and welcome to another edition of The Darker Side of Life; the SWTOR-RP weekly column where we discuss the prevailing RP issues of the day and take your opinions on them. For the past several months, I've taken your suggestions on topics from a wide variety of categories. Some of them are fairly static, others like our discussion on companions in roleplay were predictions, done before the launch of The Old Republic, based on what we knew about the game at that time. In this week's article, we're going to revisit several old topics with fresh opinions, both from old members who may have read the originals when they were first published, and fresh faces who have joined us recently, all to answer one question: how has the launch of The Old Republic changed your opinion on roleplay?
Companions aren't the only thing we'll be discussing though. Server communities was another hot topic we touched on. Many players voiced their opinions on separate servers for timezones, or RP-PvP, or even keeping everyone together. Now we'll look into how things have turned out in the first month of the game. Combat solutions, the classic dice, duel, and the emote debate can never truly be settled, but it varies by game depending on how the players feel about the options a developer provides. Lastly, we'll touch on a more recent topic, being our discussion of RP hotspots and how players are using or abusing them. Join me in this very special edition of The Darker Side of Life as we take a trip back and look at how getting to play The Old Republic has changed your thoughts on roleplay topics, if at all.

What exactly is a Gray Jedi? In this week's edition of The Darker Side of Life, we attempt to define this nebulous and often misused term. As with all of our topics, there is a measure of controversy surrounding Gray Jedi as well. Roleplayers in the past have often used Gray Jedi as a way for their character to do evil things while still being able to call themselves a hero. Where do they fit in though? Are Gray Jedi any more than a cheat mode for RP? Or do they have their own place in canon and lore? As always I've taken your responses from the thread and worked them together to form a basis for future discussion.
Join me on a ride through the minds of your fellow roleplayers as we attempt to define a Gray Jedi and how they can be used in RP. We'll look at examples – good and bad – of lore and player characters based on what you think of them. All of this boils down to one thing: what, if anything, is wrong with RPing a Gray Jedi, and is the concept as a whole flawed? Click past the break and read the rest to find out what your fellow roleplayers think, and be sure to leave a comment to help strike up the never-ending discussion!

Well sports fans, here it is the most controversial topic we've tackled to date. This is a question as old as RP itself. How do you settle conflicts? This simple question has lead to more drama and killed more communities then any other topic. I've found myself moving from one camp to another over the years, so as we approach launch I'm going to share my thoughts about each and pick a winner for The Old Republic.
I have to say though, it is amazing how this sort of thing has evolved. In the days of Dungeons and Dragons, dice was king. Live action roleplay has always been emote driven. For a long time these were your choices if you wanted to RP. As computers developed, so did roleplay options, but early games and IRC chatrooms lacked intricate and balanced PvP options, but emote had made the jump to cyberspace. The Massively Multiplayer Online Game, or MMO changed that. We now have systems that will allow us to fight our characters quickly and efficiently, but are we really better off? Has technology improved roleplay options, or just created more?

Jedi guilds for The Old Republic share similar characteristics. They offer solace to the Jedi affected by the Sacking of Coruscant, a sense of camaraderie, as well as a peaceful home to find serenity, acquire knowledge, and to learn the ways of the force. This style of roleplay may not be for everyone, but those seeking to experience the life of a Jedi in BioWare's upcoming MMO, you'll probably want to check out such guilds as The Enclave of Tython. Protected by the Enclave Defence Force, the guild offers roleplayers a place for those seeking an academy-style life, as well as opportunities to take the fight to the enemy. For more information, read on in SWTOR-RP's Guild Spotlight on The Enclave of Tython.

After combing through some of the past Force Reflections, I noticed that we have not asked one of the the simplest, yet most profound, questions we could ask the roleplayers looking forward to Star Wars: The Old Republic.
The roots of modern roleplay date back to the pen and paper days of Dungeons and Dragons. Even internet MUDs and MUSHes find their roots in PnP. But D&D is fantasy. From an outsider's perspective, there isn't a hard line between science fiction and fantasy, but as fans of the genres, we know there is definitely a line. Most of the time we don't try to cross that line. Does Star Wars have that blend of sci-fi and fantasy? Is that why it is so appealing to so many people?
Here we have pure roleplayers that will roleplay any genre in any setting. We have MMOers that like to take on a definite character and play the game as that character. We have Star Wars fans that have loved Star Wars for a long time and cannot wait to live in that universe. The ways to describe the readers of this site obviously doesn't end there. But why are we all here? What about the Star Wars universe appeals to you so much that this is the universe you want to create and play a character in? Answer in the comments below. We can't wait to read your answers.
