The Old Republic Roleplay|Site Info

Admit it: when you meet someone new, chances are you peek at their level, and maybe even open up the inspection window to look at their stats. In this week's edition of The Darker Side of Life, we're going to be diving into this issue. Does your character's level and gear matter in roleplay? On one hand we have a group that I like to call the Earners. They say that characters are what they earn. If you want to RP a Darth, get to 50 and get the Darth title. If you want to RP a powerful duelist, get some PvP gear. Characters that have had that effort put into them are more deserving of respect, right?

Not so counters the other group which I like to call the Storytellers. Respect is something a character should earn through solid roleplay, and good storytelling. If a level 10 character can play the part well, why not let them RP a Darth? Any monkey can make level 50 and get PvP gear given enough time, so why not respect things that matter more to roleplay? These are the two sides in this battle, one we're going to comb through in detail and try to work out some answers.

Join me as we take a look at your responses and attempt to dig through the issue. Does your character's level matter in roleplay? Should a player have to get their character to level 50 to be taken seriously in roleplay, or is it just a form of metagaming? Once again we're back on the same tangent of game mechanics in roleplay. Hold on tight and keep your arms and legs inside the car until we come to a complete stop, because it's going to be a wild ride.

It's time again for another Guild Spotlight! In the spirit of this being Sith Week here on SWTOR-RP, I sat down with AstralEcho of The Dark Star Society to talk to him about what makes an evil guild tick. Do you like villains lurking in the shadows and pulling the strings? This might be the guild for you then. In addition to his guild, AstralEcho and I also discuss the Galactic War Coalition, his plan for bringing a bit of PvP to RP-PvE servers, so as to allow RP-PvPers to live there as part of a larger server community. To find out more about that though, you'll have to check out his page or contact him directly. For now, we're going to take a look inside the secretive Dark Star Society. I couldn't get him to give up all his secrets, so read up and join me in trying to pry the rest out of him! Who knows what he's really up to? I'm not sure but it certainly looks like whatever it is, it will be some excellent RP for those taking part in it!

Now you might be asking yourself why it is that where you roleplay would be a hot enough topic for The Darker Side of Life. Every Wednesday we dig in to the most controversial topics in the RP community, and this one fits the bill even if it may not seem like it. To clarify, when I say public RP, I mean in an open place that other players can access normally as part of the open game world. By private, I mean closed instances where the owner can control access.

This is also the first issue after the NDA was dropped, so instead of the normal joke pictures, I'll be showing some in-game examples from The Old Republic. I encourage you to show yours as well in the comments section as part of the discussion. Every game has RP hotspots in the open world – Mos Eisley in Star Wars Galaxies or Darnassus in World of Warcraft. The Old Republic will have some as well undoubtedly, and we're going to figure out where they will be.

So the real issue this week is your preference between RPing out in the open, or in a private place that you have some measure of control over. In TOR, we will not have housing like Everquest 2 or Lord of the Rings Online. There will still be plenty of instances and player ships to go to though, but even if going to a private area gets you away from the morons, is it the best thing for the community? Read on and we'll take a look at what you had to say in the DSoL thread and find out.

The Voidstar. Its very name has an ominous ring to the ears.

The noises on the old ship are eerie with the occasional metal creak, though the rest of the vessel is so... quiet. It always got the tech at how old some of these ships could be, yet the bridge appears almost as if the long dead crew could appear at any moment. Annowyn almost expects to see the Republic ship show up and...

The alarms going off are the first real indication that something is truly wrong, and not just Annowyn's imagination. The undercurrent of her inner mental soundtrack is abruptly severed in its live feed just as her efforts to retrieve the ship’s data core are also interrupted. An explosion bubbles outward as a nearby door is blown open. Looking grim, the woman returns to her work at the consoles and with the ship’s computer.

You may have noticed that the Weekly Dev Tracker didn't make it to air last week. There was one simple reason for it, and that is because there just wasn't anything to report. It appeared as if the BioWare developers lay to temporary rest, leaving the the dev tracker on the official site for The Old Republic lacking any new shiny yellow posts. However, the developers have been back in full swing with a plethora of updates, all in their golden yellow glory.

There have been a number of new tidbits for fans of The Old Republic, consisting of new information on Jedi Consular Force abilities, Imperial Agents in PvP and ability ranges, as well as Georg Zoeller's view on how a Sage would fair up against other melee characters. Above all that, there are two updates which stand out from the rest, and one of which will greatly please the roleplaying community. David Bass, Community Coordinator at BioWare, has officially announced the types of servers that'll be made available to the players of The Old Republic. Additionally, we've finally received some clarification from Senior Writer Alexander Freed about a topic that has been running hot on SWTOR-RP. Do you finally want to know where the Jedi stand in the Republic's military in The Old Republic? Read about that, as well as all the other news below. Enjoy!
VayneVerso I have to admit, Zoeller makes the Sniper sounds pretty bad ass.

Hello everyone! It's time for our first November Guild Spotlight! Since we've seen so much discussion on Troopers and Jedi recently, I sat down with Antia Oato of the 96th Reapers Regiment to tell us how her guild makes it work. Undoubtedly there will be many different ways of solving the problem, but the 96th is on the rise, so they must be doing something right. Check out what Antia has to say on it, and be sure to let us know what you think in the comments.

Military guilds are going to be a staple of RP in The Old Republic. Many of the players gravitating towards them are veterans of similar Stormtrooper guilds in Star Wars Galaxies, as is Antia of the 96th. It's going to be a jump from oppression to liberation, but much of the military structure derived from real world armies still applies. Jedi are the wild card, especially how to work them in. The Clone Wars series has Jedi Generals heroically leading troopers into battle, but does it fit The Old Republic? The Jedi have been disgraced, and while they are still heroes to many, will the Republic Military trust them? Read on to see what Antia and the 96th have to say!

It is no secret that RP-PvP servers will be available to players when The Old Republic launches. It has been a hot topic both here and on the official forums. The way the server will work, however, is without a roleplaying ruleset, which means that players won't be forced to roleplay if they join an RP-PvP server. Doesn't that seem a little pointless in placing an RP tag on the server type? What does it achieve, other than splitting up a roleplaying community that is already struggling to remain together with server localisation issues? Why can't PvPers just battle it out on a standard RP-PvE server?

Another place where this very topic is being discussed is over at Ask A Jedi. Sa Chi's weekly column, All The Galaxy's A Stage, has tackled the idea of enforced roleplay and division within the community. Here is a snippet from his column, titled RP-PvP Servers and Rulesets:

"...it is my opinion that if you have no consequences for choices, experience has shown the RP community that things won’t go well. A fairly vocal opinion that’s surfaced in the community that I’ve observed comes down to, without enforced rulesets why bother at all with an RP server? In short, many believe that a suggestion is worthless."

Be sure to check out the full edition of All The Galaxy's A Stage: RP-PvP Servers and Rulesets over at Ask A Jedi. Feel free to comment on the topic here. We know there are many passionate PvPers out there.

Hello everyone! It's time for our first of the new twice monthly Guild Spotlights! In the spirit of the recent announcement on RP-PvP servers, I sat down with Chikt and Leoren of Raven Cross, a RP-PvP guild that traces its history back to World of Warcraft. Now that we know for sure RP-PvP servers will exist, its really brought out the discussion of what the difference is and where people will go.

Raven Cross seems to be a great example of what a RP-PvP guild can accomplish in both categories. Hopefully this interview will shed light on the issue and give a picture of what RP-PvP really is and what the players who love it do for fun. If you're curious to see more, I've included one of their videos, but you can find even more on their YouTube account. You can also find more information on their website. So read on fellow roleplayers as we take a hands-on tour of Raven Cross to find out what makes them tick. Even if RP-PvP isn't for you, they offer a well thought out new perspective that might just change how you feel.

Hello again everyone! In this week's edition of The Darker Side of Life, we're going to cover another topic that has gotten people excited: powerful characters. Now, all of us have come across characters over the years that are just absurd. My personal favorite was from Star Wars Galaxies, an Imperial Moff whose bio claimed that if he was harmed, a Star Destroyer would bombard the area from orbit. When powerful characters go to excess it can be fun to laugh at, but the real question is where do you draw the line?

How much is too much? Are there exceptions? These are the questions we'll be looking at in depth in this week's edition. You told me what the ups and downs of these characters are in your own words, and now I'm going to put it all together in an attempt to find an answer in all of it. Would Star Wars still be as exciting if Luke Skywalker was just a farm boy with a blaster, or if he was a Jedi Grandmaster from birth? Probably not. Does that give us the right to make our own powerful characters? Well, you're just going to have to read on to find out.

For those of you that have played Star Wars: Galaxies, you'd recall a bounty system that existed throughout the many changes to the game. Originally, the players of the rare Jedi profession would accumulate points every time they used an ability near another player. Those particular Jedi would then end up on the Bounty Hunter Terminal as a mission, or a bounty, with a monetary reward. The very early Jedi would be awfully worried about permadeath -- a term used which describes the permanent death of a character if they were killed. Basically, no cloning terminal for you! The game eventually evolved, removing the permadeath feature and adding player bounties for other players of different professions that participated in PvP. Some may say it was a great system, and something that could have been used for those preferring the RP-PvP play-style.

In The Old Republic, we're not certain whether or not similar mission or bounty terminals will exist. However, Bounty Hunters are one of the eight playable classes, which opens up a whole playing field for player bounties through roleplay. Whether or not a particular game mechanic will be made available to players allowing for player bounties, roleplayers will have to unite and form some story arcs that bring player bounties to the game. The decision is then to either have an emote duel, or battle it out via PvPing methods. Sounds fun, right?

In today's Force Reflection, we'd like to know whether or not you'll make yourself available for player bounties. Whether you're a Bounty Hunter taking the mission, a player of another class putting a price on another player's head, or a player on the receiving end of the bounty having to defend yourself against the likes of the Bounty Hunters, pop your thoughts in the comments section.
