The
relationship between a student and their mentor is one we see multiple
times in the Star Wars films; Obi-Wan and Luke, Anakin and Palpatine, or
all the shades in between. Learning from others isn't exclusive to the
Jedi, or the Sith, though -- an older pilot could have a younger sidekick
he's taken under his wing, or a Bounty Hunter might keep an eye out for
a less experienced newcomer. We've already seen the a wide variety of
teachers and students in The Old Republic, acting out that familiar
relationship, whether it be in or out of character. Almost universally,
it tends to be a great source of jokes, fun, and fantastic roleplay
adventures. That leads to the discussion for this Force
Reflection: who are your mentors, and what do they mean, to you? Are
they your Padawan's Master, or is your relationship one of a slave being
forced to serve a Dark Lord? Did it start through a coincidence of
roleplay; a chance encounter that struck the interest of one of you, and
continued from there? Or did you seek out and arrange something with a
friend, or, perhaps, a complete stranger? Does your Agent have a sidekick; does your Trooper have someone they look out for? How's it worked out? Make your
voice heard, as always, in the comments. Just be sure to ask your master for permission first, slave.

We all have our masters, and we all have our students. They will come and go over time, whether they're your boss at work, an older family member, or a child of yours that follows in your every footstep. We pick up our life lessons from our masters, and we pass them on to our students. So really, any bad habits that any of your students pick up can be blamed entirely on you. Hopefully your students don't pick their noses and eat their snot, because what will others think of you? Tsk tsk.
Jedi have never been seen picking their noses, however, as their teachers come from a moralistic and philosophical group of individuals that place importance on selflessness, discipline, and immense meditation. A Jedi's career will usually start off at the rank of Initiate as a youngling. Eventually, a Jedi will progress through the ranks to Padawan, then to Jedi Knight and perhaps one day a Jedi Master. Along the way however, the Jedi will have picked up numerous teachers who would have taught them all they know, allowing that knowledge to be passed on to many students.
In The Old Republic, immersing a character into a life within the walls of the Jedi Temple is very much a possibility. The Jedi Temple on Tython has many halls and rooms for teaching and sparring practice, allowing for characters to roleplay a Jedi Master-Padawan relationship within the grounds of the Jedi Temple. In today's Force Reflection, tell us whether you will be participating in such a relationship with another roleplayer, and if so, let us know how you plan to implement it. Pop any thoughts or ideas in the comments section of this article.

Welcome to the second edition of The Jedi Path: Teachings of the Jedi Order. In this article mini-series, we leech onto the knowledge and lore contained with Daniel Wallace's book, The Jedi Path. In Part I, we focused briefly on the Jedi Code, but we went into detail with some of the lore surrounding the teachings and day-to-day activities of a Jedi Initiate. In Part II, we take you through the lessons and requirements of a Jedi taken as a Padawan by a Jedi Knight or Jedi Master. The path is difficult, and it requires much patience. However, a successful apprenticeship will eventually take a Jedi Padawan to the Jedi Trials where the title of Jedi Knight could be had. Let's not get ahead of ourselves though. Let's take a look at what being a Jedi Padawan is all about.
Most Jedi Initiates will be deemed ready for an apprenticeship at around the humanoid age of twelve to fourteen standard years. After passing the Initiate Trials which was outlined in Part I of the miniseries, Jedi Initiates can increase their chances of being chosen by a Jedi Knight or Jedi Master for an apprenticeship by participating in the Apprentice Tournament. The tournament consists of lightsaber contests which are viewed by the Knights and Masters of the Order as they scope out potential Padawan learners. At times, the tournament consists of free-for-all contests, as well as battles in a zero-g chamber.

Slavery is just about as controversial as topics come in roleplay. It comes with not just one can of worms but many. In this edition of The Darker Side of Life, we'll be cracking open a few of those cans to see what we can find inside. What is slavery roleplay? What do the slaves and masters do, and how does it affect our community? Is it all just one big erotic roleplay orgy? These questions and more will be addressed with your responses to the Darker Side of Life thread.
In the Star Wars and The Old Republic universe, slavery is almost everywhere. Though illegal in the Republic, slavery is law in the Empire and a thriving business on independent worlds. The Sith Inquisitor even begins their class story bound in slavery, so it seems like we can say that it's impact on our world is undeniable. While real world slavery still exists to this day and is a deplorable institution, I invite you to check your real world misgivings at the door and enter into a world where many live and die by the shock collar.

The bond between soul mates can be everlasting -- through sickness and through health, through life and death. The understanding, love and loyalty which forms through such bonds is said to be eternal. Only the harshest and most extreme circumstances, though rare, could ever destroy the attachment. In the world of Star Wars, we have seen bonds form and break. Some have rekindled and others were considered truly lost. The bond between the Jedi Exile and Kreia in the Knights of the Old Republic II, created through the force, came to a dark and epic end. Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi were separated due to Anakin's misguided thoughts and his undeniable love for Padmé. On the contrary, we have the bond between Obi-Wan Kenobi and Qui-Gon Jinn. It was not resentment or betrayal that separated the two. It was the swift blow of death that ended the living bond between Padawan and Master. Qui-Gon Jinn's life was prematurely taken from him by Darth Maul in Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace. Though Qui-Gon's life faltered, memories of what the two men shared lived on through the Force and in Obi-Wan Kenobi. It is those kind of memories that make the experiences shared between a Padawan and Master unforgettable. In The Old Republic, players will have the opportunity play either role. Padawan or Master? The choice is yours. This article will highlight the ways and experiences of a Jedi Padawan and Master, from the point of promotion from a Jedi Initiate, to the tests of the Jedi Trials.
