After a holiday break and much-needed Star Wars: The Old Republic play time, our guys from Beyond the Grind are back with a vengeance -- maybe not with a vengeance, but certainly with style and tips for roleplayers making their way through the world of TOR. Baraslan of the Mantell Syndicate and Shaddoe from Massively and Gamebreaker.TV discuss the intimate details of roleplaying in our favorite MMORPG.
Our dynamic duo cover the best and worst in the game so far from the perspective of a roleplayer; also, they tell us about their favorite out-of-the-way roleplay venue. Lastly, Shaddoe says his final good-byes to the MMO that kick-started his love of roleplay: Star Wars Galaxies.
If you're new to roleplay or love to discuss the intricacies of making your roleplay better, then you will not want to miss a single bi-weekly episode of Beyond the Grind.
Episode 21 of Beyond the Grind: "The Pureblood Smuggler Legacy" is now available. (Actually it's been available since last weekend, but it's been a busy news week.) Join Baraslan and Shaddoe, as they once again provide a rolelayer's insight on the latest news from Bioware and The Old Republic. This Episode covers the Consular progression video, the Bioware free soundtrack giveaway and the controversial "Legacy System" as well as a small reveal from the latest round of beta testing. Shaddoe also provides comprehensive lore about the Pureblood Sith for those interested in roleplaying them or simply understanding their role in the Star Wars universe (and why they seem to frequently have an air of arrogance and entitlement).
This episode is sponsored by the BTG9000 Legacy Improbability Transcorder - Don't worry about illogical and genetically impossible family legacies - let the BTG9000 do that for you!
Yay! The non-disclosure agreement has been dropped from Star Wars: The Old Republic, and our friends at Beyond the Grind spill the beans about everything. OK, not everything, but at least when a topic comes up, the hosts are free to voice their opinions completely. We still aren't sure if that's a good or a bad thing. However, our very own Vaanthe joins regular hosts Baraslan and Shaddoe to not only balance out the testosterone with the woman's point of view, but also give her insights from the Fan Site Summit.
If you have not read anything from the Fan Site Summit yet, or if you just can't get enough of talking about roleplayer in The Old Republic, then you absolutely have to check out this week's Beyond the Grind podcast!
Tziena and Vaanthe are back from the second Fan Site Summit, held with the developers from BioWare and the selected fan sites for The Old Republicat the BioWare base in Austin, Texas. Game Director and Lead Designer James Ohlen, Lead Combat Designer Georg Zoeller, and Lead End-Game and PvP Designer Gabe Amatangelo participated in interviews and Q&A sessions during the Summit. Want to know what they discussed? We've compiled the best bits in another wrap-up where you'll find information on achievements, chat bubbles, social points and some of the items you'll be able to purchase, as well as details for character's wishing to maintain some neutrality on the light and dark side scale. PvP is discussed, as are game metrics used by BioWare to monitor specific in-game activities. Continue reading to soak up the best bits from the Fan Site Summit Q&A with the developers.
Achievements have been popping up in both PC and console games of late, and The Old Republic won't be seeing any shortage of them. James Ohlen kicks off proceedings by touching on the achievements system which will be available at launch. It is a system that can be easily expanded upon, and we'll be seeing more achievement additions in future updates implemented by BioWare. Don't expect to find achievements at every corner of the game, as it is still in the works, as well as being a system that James Ohlen believes is used more often by players making use of end-game content.
For those keeping records, Sunday was actually day zero. However, all day today at day one, we were treated to a tour of the BioWare studios and a lot of game time in Star Wars: The Old Republic. I'll be right up front: A lot of the things discussed at the studio cannot talked about right now. But we can talk about the Q&A that we had with Creative Director James Ohlen. When we get back, we will have the full audio to the Q&A. However, I would like to give you the highlights.
The first roleplay-related question that I want to touch on was asked by Baraslan of the Mantell Syndicate. He asked about the story instances -- the areas behind the red force field that you cannot get into accept via your class story. James said they are looking at possibly opening up those areas to everyone. However, there is no way this feature will be in at launch because the instances are such an integral part of the game that it would require some major restructuring.
After the break, we get answers to a few more of your questions. Keep reading!
As you know, Beyond the Grind podcasts news from Star Wars: The Old Republic as it relates to roleplayers. Even though we represent about 20% of the MMO market, it is hard to find a podcast to help make RP more epic. However, Baraslan and Shaddoe do their darnedest to lift your TOR experience to a new level.
This week, the duo spar off about the grey side choices within TOR storylines, and since Shaddoe is able to speak a bit of his experience in beta, the topics of IC PvP, social points, dancing, and disrobing during conversations make their way to the forefront. Also, we gave permission for Beyond the Grind to answer some of your questions before going to the Fan Site Summit. This is not exactly normal, but because of the last Beyond the Grind being so late, we have two episodes in the one week. And it's a good thing we do. As some of you may be aware, one of the regular hosts for this roleplay-centered podcast is a member of the press. Thankfully, Shaddoe was invited to join in the Star Wars: The Old Republic Media Event. With permission from the public relations department at BioWare, he is allowed to talk about his experiences with the first two planets on the Republic side of the Galactic Cold War.
Topics ranged from factions and social hubs to questing and jumping off buildings, but Beyond the Grind is looking for your questions as well. Obviously, they cannot talk about endgame, yet, but anything on the Republic origin worlds and Coruscant is up for grabs. Ask them anything you'd like in the comments below or at their podbean site, and they will do their best to answer them in the next show.
Until then enjoy this meal of magnificent roleplay reveals from Star Wars: The Old Republic.
The regular podcast spotlighting roleplay for Star War: The Old Republic is a little late this time, but in the end it is worth it. Your regular hosts of Beyond the Grind, Baraslan and Shaddoe, dragged two of your senior staff into the podcast. Gracing the airways are Editor-in-Chief Ganden and Forum Administrator Vaanthe.
The roleplay quartet discuss everything from RP-PVP servers to mesmerizing geekbating, whatever that means. But that's not all; this very site is the spotlight of the last half of the conversation. You get to hear the good, the bad, and the awesome about this site and why we think it's important to have a place like this.

We know you have been wondering, "Whatever happened to that awesome podcast that used to appear on this site?" Well, it was never really gone, it just wasn't -- how can we say this? -- independent. The important thing is that it's back with a vengeance. There have been some changes in the last seven episodes. Mantell Syndicate's resident scruffy-looking nerf herder Baraslan gained a new co-host: Massively.comStar Wars: The Old Republic columnist Larry "Shaddoe" Everett. (He's a roleplayer -- who knew?)
In the latest installment, Baraslan and Shaddoe are joined by a roleplayer this community should be familiar with. Former Star Wars Galaxies Roleplayer Senator Joron Darkdust discusses the Gamescom, cross-faction communication, and other roleplay related news with our regular podcast crew. Check out the latest episode below and don't miss the past episodes, which are accessible in the podcast widget on the right!
Hello again everyone, it's time again for our monthly Guild Spotlight! In this popular column, we've already brought you inside information on several up-and-coming RP guilds. This month, I sat down with the leader of the Mantell Syndicate, Baraslan, to get the scoop on his guild, and what makes them special. For more information you can check them out on the guild board here, or on their website.
