With early access for The Old Republic well under way, the Guides here at SWTOR-RP will be kick-starting their campaign across all of the roleplaying servers, covering a wide range of planets. Their goal is to assist players of new and old in their gaming and roleplaying endeavours. Despite our efforts in helping our members understand their roles, some people are still confused about what they do and how to get in contact with them. If you're requiring assistance, be sure to hit up Sebaya in a private message, and she can help coordinate a Guide to lend you a helping hand.
Help is dandy, but the Staff Spotlight feature isn't simply about knowing what it is we do here at SWTOR-RP. What these spotlights are truly for is to open up our staff to our community so that you can get to know who we are. Allowing our members to connect with the staff on a personal level brings us that much closer. Sebaya and In-Betweener have had their turns, and it is now time to turn to one of our guides and socially active members of the site. Here is Adlai, and this is his story.

Just how do you gain information on another character? It seems like a simple question, but the hard truth is far from simple. For instance, how can you tell information that was gained from eavesdropping from something that was metagamed? In this week's edition of The Darker Side of Life, we'll be examining the issues surrounding information gathering in roleplay.
Information is a currency all its own, and many successful guilds and characters have built themselves up on trading it. In the Darker Side of Life thread, I asked you to share your experiences with trading information and how it worked for you. I also brought up the information family's black sheep: guild infiltration. To be sure, it can be one of the best ways to get information, but also the most dramatic, as many might consider it an OOC breach of trust.
In the end, most of the issues with information gathering boil down to two well-known troublemakers: consent and metagaming. If a player decides to metagame, there isn't too much we can do about it. Consent is an entirely different beast because many players share wildly differing opinions and practices which can make RPing together difficult. As always, we'll take a closer look at the issues using your feedback and try to build a consensus on the issue. Read on and see what the rest of the community has to say about spying and infiltration!

In this week's edition of The Darker Side of Life, we delve into the dark side of character creation using outside lore. Making a character can be difficult. As we discussed in the Mary Sue article, it can be easy to go off the rails. You might think looking to other fantasy or Sci-Fi sources might be an easy way of getting some inspiration, but is it really the best idea?
On one hand it can be a great way to get inspiration for a character that breaks the mold of traditional Jedi and Sith, but once again we find ourselves asking the question, where do you draw the line? Inspiration is different then ripping characters directly out of another lore source. Malcom Reynolds from Firefly is a great inspiration for Smugglers, but when they start adopting all his mannerisms and using quotes he made, has it gone too far?
As if things weren't already complicated enough, Star Wars has been around for so long that legitimate writers in the Extended Universe have already cannibalized outside lore for their own books. Have you ever heard of Star Dragons in Star Wars? Would you want to RP with one in The Old Republic? We'll be diving into this, and be sure to let us know what you think in the comments section, but for now, read on!

Hello again everyone. In this week's edition of The Darker Side of Life we'll be discussing force sensitive and normal characters, and how they match up. In the movies, Jedi and Sith are always the heroes and villains, but does it have to be that way? Can a normal character be just as heroic or villainous in The Old Republic? We'll be diving into this issue using your responses from the Darker Side of Life thread, as well as discussing how the characters can interact with one another.
As the title image suggests, who would win in a fight; Darth Vader or Boba Fett? A few years ago everyone but the Mandalorian fanboys would have said Vader. The Old Republic however puts all of the classes on an equal footing. But can the force really be offset by kickass gear? We'll attempt to answer this as we dig through your responses.
The question really is how they match up in practice out in the roleplay world. Can a Sith Lord boss around a Bounty Hunter? How about a Jedi with Troopers? These sorts of questions have been all over the forum recently, and we'll be diving into them as well. The Old Republic's class stories are supposed to make all the classes heroic, but is this a good thing, or could it inflate egos too much, only to have them burst when dealing with players instead of NPCs? Read on and let us know what you think!

Welcome back everyone to this week's The Darker Side of Life. In this edition, we will be discussing our characters and how we create and become attached to them. The two main issues here are called Mary Sue, and the IC/OOC divide. Mary Sue refers to the complexity of a character, their balance, and how much of ourselves we put into them. The IC/OOC divide is a term for how we keep ourselves as players separate from our characters, sometimes not always successfully.
When I think of Mary Sues, I like to think of Duke Nukem. He represents an unstoppable killing machine bubbling over with testosterone that is out to kick ass, get the ladies, and nothing else. When it comes down to it though, it's not much fun to be in Duke Nukem's universe if you aren't the king himself. Mary Sues tend to put other roleplayers in a similar position, since they are often all powerful or unstoppable. The question is, where do you draw the line? How much is too much?
The IC/OOC divide is an even more convoluted topic. We often put a bit of ourselves into our characters, but again, how much is too much? How do you know when you've become so attached to a character you cannot bear to see them harmed? Every roleplayer has become too attached at some point, and the question here is more how to deal with it when it happens, otherwise it can be a problem for everyone around you.

Slavery is just about as controversial as topics come in roleplay. It comes with not just one can of worms but many. In this edition of The Darker Side of Life, we'll be cracking open a few of those cans to see what we can find inside. What is slavery roleplay? What do the slaves and masters do, and how does it affect our community? Is it all just one big erotic roleplay orgy? These questions and more will be addressed with your responses to the Darker Side of Life thread.
In the Star Wars and The Old Republic universe, slavery is almost everywhere. Though illegal in the Republic, slavery is law in the Empire and a thriving business on independent worlds. The Sith Inquisitor even begins their class story bound in slavery, so it seems like we can say that it's impact on our world is undeniable. While real world slavery still exists to this day and is a deplorable institution, I invite you to check your real world misgivings at the door and enter into a world where many live and die by the shock collar.

Hello again everyone and welcome back for this weeks The Darker Side of Life. In this edition we cover the controversial debate between two different types of roleplay. Cantina roleplay is simply roleplay centered around a cantina or some other gathering place. Adventure roleplay focuses on the opposite, consisting of getting out and fighting or exploring. While very vague, these two categories comprise most of the different types of roleplay we can accomplish in The Old Republic.
So where is the controversy you might ask? Well if you ask that, you must not have spent much time on an RP forum before. The two competing camps often snipe at each other and proclaim their way is the true best way to play. If you thought I've been too soft lately, then I have news for you, because the gloves are coming off again, and Sebaya is going to set this issue to rest. For the good of our growing RP community, we're going to find a happy medium or die trying. I hope you have life insurance!

Hello again, everyone! I have to say it was hard writing this after hearing that The Old Republic will offer same-sex relationships with companions, but we'll be talking about that next week once you've had a chance to comment on the Darker Side of Life thread. This week's topic is something close to my heart though, and something many of you disagree with me on. Player run storylines give the world a sense of being alive. Like it or not, TOR is a static world. The same mobs, NPC, and buildings are going to be there day after day.
I believe allowing big community plots to affect small changes within the world. This is one of those times I'm glad we take comments in advance because I want to address concerns and make my case. If you still disagree, especially if you're the original commenter, I do hope you will reply in our comments so we can continue the discussion.
